Author Robin Moore Visits FCS Third Grade
5/21/2008
This spring, the third grade at Friends' Central has been studying American Indians, in particular the Lenape, who once inhabited this area. As a special supplement to their studies, local children's book author, historian, and professional storyteller Robin Moore recently came to visit the entire grade. He began the morning by conducting a tipi-raising workshop with the students. In one hour, they put up a full-size tipi. Each class had a chance to sit inside and learn about how the Lenape lived. Later, Robin sat with the children beneath a tree and told traditional stories. His compelling tale of the evil sorcerer "Old One Eye" and the young boy who defeated him made the children jump more than once! Robin also talked to the attentive students about Lenape deerskin attire and tools. Some lucky students even got to try on the clothing themselves. Robin has been visiting the Friends' Central third grade for nearly twenty years.
