This coming year, Friends' Central is thrilled to introduce a new title and experience for the FCS Athletic Department. Now under the umbrella of Athletics and Wellness, the department will work more closely with Support Services, division principals, and curricula in an effort to better educate the whole child, Nursery-grade 12.

Upper School students and science teachers visited Green Bank Observatory, home to the world's largest fully steerable telescope. The trip was the culmination of a yearlong study of astrophysics and astronomy that featured a visit from Barnard College professor Janna Levin, author and theoretical physicist.

Friends' Central graduating senior Sydney Bennett is heading to St. Joseph's University in the fall, and as a result of Sydney's intelligence, hard work, confidence, and tenacity, she will attend the school on full scholarship. Sydney is a recipient of the prestigious Ignatian College Connection (ICC) Scholarship, a full-tuition scholarship awarded to just five high-achieving seniors.

On May 17, Friends' Central held its annual Upper School Academic Awards Ceremony, recognizing students for their outstanding efforts in academics, arts, athletics, service, and citizenship. Highlighting the ceremony was the induction of 19 members of the Class of 2017 into the Cum Laude Society.

It can be difficult, not to mention costly, to provide healthy, farm-fresh, and also tasty lunches for children on a daily basis. At Friends' Central School, the guesswork has been taken out of school lunches, with an exciting new school lunch program that begins in the Lower School organic garden.

On April 17, Friends' Central welcomed over 320 people, including 150 Middle School student qualifiers from both public and private schools in the tri-state area, at the Regional Finals of the National History Bee. Eight FCS Middle Schoolers qualified for and participated in the Regional Finals. Based on their performance at Regionals, four students qualified for National Finals. In addition, nine students competed in the National Competition in the Upper School division, which also took place in April.

The Friends' Central Phoenix enjoyed a strong winter 2016-2017 season, bringing home FSL Championships in boys' swimming (14th consecutive) and girls' swimming, two athletes being named Main Line Athletes of the Week, and a number of winter athletes receiving All-FSL honors. To celebrate the end of an exciting winter sports season, on March 23, winter Varsity coaches presented awards honoring most valuable and most improved players, as well as captains and All-League recipients.

Friends' Central senior Simone Gibson was named the Pennsylvania recipient of the $10,000 AXA Achievement Scholarship. One of just 41 exceptional students from around the US to receive this award, Gibson will use this scholarship to attend the college of her choice in the fall. As a part of Gibson's scholarship, Friends' Central will also receive a $1,000 grant to be used for Professional Development activities in honor of its ongoing dedication to Gibson and to the local community.

The KB classroom has been transformed into an enchanting, verdant, and interactive rainforest. Kindergartners partnered with their grade 5 buddies on an exciting cross-curricular project - from classroom to the art room to the Light Lab - to create a one-of-a-kind, artistic, and interactive display board, which provided the backdrop for the KB Rainforest Play, the culmination of many weeks of learning about the ecosystem and inhabitants of the rainforest.

Throughout our extensive, multi-tiered search process, our priority was identifying and hiring a passionate, driven leader for this new role, connecting and striving for excellence in the distinct, yet interrelated, realms of Athletics and Wellness. FCS alumnus Benj Pasek '03, with songwriting partner Justin Paul and composer Justin Hurwitz, won the Academy Award for Best Original Song for "City of Stars" in the highly acclaimed film La La Land starring Ryan Gosling and Emma Stone. Pasek, Paul, and Hurwitz were also nominated for a second song, "Audition," in the Best Original Song category. La La Land won a total seven Academy Awards on February 26.

This week, PlusUs announced that Friends' Central School has been named a recipient of the Design for Learning Grant. An educational consultancy, PlusUs works with clients to create communications, workshops, spaces, and strategy; the Grant is aimed at helping schools implement projects focused on instruction, strategy, communications, teacher training, or physical learning environments. Friends' Central Makerspace Director Michael Darfler shares, "We're incredibly honored and thrilled to have been named a recipient of the Design for Learning Grant. With the support and expertise of PlusUs, we will continue to expand access to Making and to empowering our students to be leaders of their own education."

The Consortium for Mathematics and its Applications (COMAP) named Friends' Central's Upper School Math Modeling Team a National Finalist in the 19th Annual High School Mathematical Modeling Contest. Three FCS teams entered the competition - all three teams placed in the top third, one team placed in the top 10%, and for the second consecutive year, one FCS team placed in the top 2% earning National Finalist recognition and qualifying for the next round – a 5-day international competition this April.

On Saturday, November 12, FCS hosted the second annual Diversity Conference entitled Different Voices, Same Vision: Selfhood and the American Perspective. Created in 2015 and led by FCS student Simone Gibson '17, this year's conference provided a space for students and teachers from Philadelphia area public, private, and parochial schools to discuss topics in race relations, make sense of this year's election, and inspire people to take action and advocate for change.

The 2016 issue of INK, the Friends' Central Literature and Art Magazine, is now available, featuring a stunning collection of over two dozen poems, prose, and short stories and over 30 works of art. Co-editors Grace Kauffman-Rosengarten '16 and Sara Thal '16 spent all year collecting, editing, and laying out written and visual art submissions for this year's edition of INK, and their hard work shows in this year's outstanding magazine.

On Monday, May 2, 5th grade students held a mock Mission to Mars for the Lower School community. They "traveled to Mars" via a 10-minute launch sequence simulation, complete with students from Mission Control performing checks leading up to the launch and a Google Chat video of the astronauts in space! After the simulation, they held a Mission to Mars Fair, sharing what they'd learned and offering related activities for visitors.
