New Families - Please check each tab in the drop-down list on this back-to-school info page for items pertaining to your child(ren). Also, for new Lower and Middle School families, new parent handbooks will be arriving in your mailboxes in early August!

New Upper School Students: Pre-Orientation - Wednesday, August 30

Grade 9 Students:
3:00 pm Grade 9 students new to FCS arrive in the Main Building lobby for tech and Quakerism introductions
3:45 pm Grade 9 guides arrive and gather in front of Shallcross to meet their new classmates and go bowling. (Note: everyone in grade 9 is invited and will be sent a permission slip, but guides are required to attend.)
6:00 pm The entire ninth grade meets to have a hoagie dinner in the Dining Hall.
6:30 pm Gathering with Mr. Kennedy, Mr. MacFarlane, and Mr. McDonnell in FCC Lecture Hall
7:00 pm Meet in homeroom groups with Peer Mentors
8:00 pm Parent pick-up

New Grade 10 International Students

Upper School
All grade 9 & 12 students: 8:30 am-1 pm
All grade 10 & 11 students: 10 am-1 pm

Middle School
All grade 6 students and new students in grades 7 & 8: 9:30-11:30 am; parents are also welcome to stay during that time for their own orientation program.

Lower School
All Nursery, Pre-K, and Kindergarten students: last names beginning with A-L attend 9-9:30 am; last names beginning with M-Z attend 9:30-10 am 

NEW students in grades 1-5: 9-10 am

First full day of classes for all students is Tuesday, September 5.

Health Forms
No new student will be permitted to start school without a completed School Physical Examination Form. Please see the Health Forms tab below for details on health requirements and relevant forms.

Veracross Parent Portal
Veracross is the School's password-protected portal where parents can find important information about their child's schedule (available in late August) and progress reports (at the end of each semester), as well as other information like our "nearby families" feature, which allows parents to view which FCS families live in or near your neighborhood. Newly enrolled families will have access to the Veracross parent portal in mid/late July; we will communicate with you when your Veracross parent portal is live and you are able to log in. In the meantime, for more information, please visit our ParentHelp blog.

1-to-1 iPad Program
Friends' Central is a 1-to-1 iPad school. All students in Middle and Upper Schools are required to have an iPad at school. Please see the iPad Information tab below for more details. 

Lower School

Middle School

Upper School
Please see the Fall Preseason Athletics tab below for information on preseason. Please note: parents of all students who will be participating in Upper School athletics need to complete an Emergency Consent Form.  


Health Forms

A School Physical Examination Form is required for every student every year. It is due on the month of your child's birthday or on the anniversary of your child's last physical examination. For new students, a Physical Examination Form is required before your child may attend the first day of school. Participation in 6th through 12th grade athletic activities will be denied if a current Physical Form is not on file. For all the details about required medical forms, please visit the Health Services page of our website. Please return completed paper forms to the attention of the nurse in your child(ren)'s division (Lower School or Middle/Upper School).

Summer Reading Lists

Required Books and iPad Apps

Lower School
There are no required books to be purchased for Lower School students.

Middle School
Middle School students will be supplied with a list of required books once school starts in the fall.

Click here for a list of foundational apps. Any additional apps will be shared by teachers via their class websites.

Upper School 
A list of Upper School required books will be available in early August. The FCS School Store no longer sells books; however, a simple-to-use website for parents to use for purchasing their child’s books, which includes each book's ISBN number, will be available and shared with you in mid-August.

Lower School
There are no iPad apps required for Lower School students.

Middle School
Click here for a list of foundational iPad apps. If any additional apps are required, teachers will inform students via class websites. 

Upper School
In addition to an iPad, Upper School students that want to use the iPad as a laptop replacement may also benefit from purchasing a keyboard. A laptop/chromebook with a full browser may be needed to complete certain projects. Your child's teachers will share details directly with you and your child in the fall. Upper School class-specific app lists will be shared on teachers' webpages.

Friends’ Central provides door-to-door transportation to both campuses, a shuttle service between the campuses, and a Center City shuttle for Lower School students. Visit our Student Transportation page for information about school district busing and public transportation options, including the free shuttle service to Overbrook train station.

Lower School Information

Lower School Transportation
In early August, Lower School parents will receive a survey via email to determine how their children are traveling to and from school. Online registration for transportation will be available in August. Click here for more information about transportation.  

Lower School Extended Day
The Friends' Central Lower School Extended Day Program (EDP) seeks to create a settled, supervised environment for Lower School students who need to arrive early or stay on campus beyond the end of the school day. Each day, there are planned activities, as well as time for free play and time for homework. Online registration for Extended Day will be available in August. Lower School After-School Clubs
In late summer, Lower School parents will be notified of the fall 2017 After-School Clubs offerings, dates, and sign-up information. Clubs take place from 3-4 pm, and students must either be picked up at 4 pm or go to Extended Day.

Middle School Drama Program
The Middle School performs two plays each year. Middle School students sign up for the fall play within the first two weeks of school. The Middle School drama director will share information about the auditions and rehearsal schedule for our fall Middle School production of Shrek, Jr. at the end of the summer. She will also post information on the Middle School Drama website. Middle School play rehearsals are held on Tuesdays, Thursdays, and Fridays from 3:30-5:00 pm. All students are welcome and encouraged to participate! Participating in the play does not conflict with participation in sports. Middle School Drama Director Julie Gordon will share information about the auditions and rehearsals during the summer and school year, and you can click here to find out more. Middle School Fall Athletics Information
All Middle School students are part of the Athletic program. Students sign up for fall athletics during the first week of school. There is no preseason for the Middle School athletic program. Practices are built into the school day (2-3 pm on Mon., Tues, Thurs., Fri.; 2:30-3 pm on Wed.). Game days for interscholastic sports are Mondays and Wednesdays, and games occur after school hours.

The fall athletic offerings are:
Co-ed: Cross Country, Water Polo, Intramural Fitness (limited spaces available), Intramural Flag Football
Girls: Soccer, Field Hockey, and Tennis
Boys: Soccer

Home & School (HSA)

The Home and School Association is the organized body of Friends' Central parents and guardians. The personal investment of mothers and fathers in their children's education is an integral part of the School's philosophy, and by encouraging parental involvement, Friends' Central accomplishes its goal of establishing a partnership between the School, the student, and the family.
