Is your child an explorer, a maker, an athlete, an artist, or a scholar? Or are you looking for a fun, vibrant day camp experience with a breadth of opportunities for your child? If the answer is yes to any of these questions, then don’t miss out on a Friends’ Central summer!
From two vibrant day camps for children ages 3-12 to NEW and exciting specialty camps like “Mighty Makers” for students in grades 1-5 or Summer Scholars for incoming high schoolers, opportunities abound for kids with a range of different interests and passions to thrive at Friends’ Central.
If your child likes to swim, Friends’ Central’s summer programs offer an exceptional swim instruction program on both campuses for beginning and experienced swimmers alike. Starting with swim safety and accelerating to learning basic and advanced swim strokes, swimmers of all ages and levels enjoy an outstanding and fun swimming program with established swim instructors and coaches. The Lowther family shares, “The swimming program is second to none at Friends’ Central’s Summer Programs. Our daughter fell in love with swimming at Tenderfoot when she was three years old, and now five years later, she’s swimming in the outstanding aquatics program at Friends’ Central. She wants to stay in the pool year round and eventually swim competitively, which we couldn’t be more excited about!”
For a vibrant day camp experience, Tenderfoot (ages 3-6) and Trailblazer (ages 6-12) offer an array of fun activities tailored to children's age levels and interests. For the youngest campers, Tenderfoot Camp focuses on social development, independence, curiosity, nurturing of new friendships, and strengthening self-esteem, broadening their experiences and seeing what the world around them has to offer. Swimming, music and drama, arts and crafts, sports, and nature are part of daily life at Tenderfoot, with theme weeks providing a level of excitement and anticipation for 3- to 6-year-olds. Newly expanded this year is our 6-year-old WOW program, which gives campers myriad opportunities to create, innovate, and learn in our BRAND NEW Light Lab, with activities like Invention Convention and Robotics. For older children ages 6-12, Trailblazer Camp, which is filling quickly, gives campers an active morning of group activities, including swimming, archery, art, drama, sports, and crafts, while afternoons are designed to nurture the individual passions of each camper through our Pathfinder program, which gives children the opportunity to choose from featured activities like archery, drama, sports, crafts, or Einstein By Design.
NEW in 2017!! Spaces are already a hot commodity for our new programs: Mighty Maker Camp (grades 1-5) and STEAM Explorer (grades 5-7). Friends’ Central is on the forefront of the Maker Education Movement, with Makerspaces now on both campuses, including a brand new Light Lab on our Lower School campus and a newly expanded Makerspace studio on our City Avenue campus. Mighty Maker, a two-week camp for children entering grades 1-5, gives curious, engaged children who are interested in science, exploring the world around them, and hands-on learning the chance to dig deeper in the realms of coding, inventing, filmmaking, animation, and much more! STEAM Explorer gives inquisitive children entering grades 5-7 interactive spaces to ignite their creativity and engage their minds, exploring themes of computer programming and electronics to sewing and design and 3D printing and fabrication.
For the basketball enthusiast, our Basketball, Reading, and Math Clinic provides a lively, encouraging environment to develop all levels of basketball skills while supporting the academic needs of campers. Classroom activities are interactive and designed to be both fun and educational. Highlights of the program include guest speakers, a life skills discussion group, and a fitness awareness program. Financial Aid is available for this camp.
Students looking for an academic program that will give them a head start for college or high school - look no further. Friends’ Central’s Summer Scholars programs feature courses in SAT Prep, Applied Math, College Application Essay writing, Intensive Tutorial in Mathematics, and Jump Start for children entering grades 6 and 9. Individualized attention, flexibility, and small class sizes allow for instruction geared toward students' specific needs in a relaxed, informal setting.
The breadth of programming offered and the value provided by Friends’ Central’s Summer Programs keeps families returning year after year. The Dougherty family shares, “My kids LOVE this camp! The counselors are wonderful with the children, and the variety of activities offered is fantastic. My kids cry at the end of camp each year! They miss their counselors and camp friends and very much look forward to summer just for camp. Thanks for everything you do - keep up the good work!”
