The Friends’ Central Phoenix enjoyed a strong winter 2016-2017 season, bringing home FSL Championships in boys’ swimming (14th consecutive) and girls’ swimming, two athletes being named Main Line Athletes of the Week, and a number of winter athletes receiving all-FSL honors. To celebrate the end of an exciting winter sports season, on Thursday, March 23, winter Varsity coaches gave out awards honoring most valuable and most improved players, as well as captains and All-FSL recipients.
The following winter athletes received the Most Valuable Player (MVP) award for their respective sports: Antone Walker for boys’ basketball, Zoe Ginsberg and Nia Jordan for girls’ basketball, Mike Hogarty for boys’ indoor track, Emily Burd and Ava Forman for girls’ indoor track, Blake Roshkoff for boys’ squash, Claire Coss for girls’ squash, Luke Volkert for boys’ swimming, Olivia Bartholomew for girls’ swimming, and Alex Helpin for wrestling.
The following winter athletes were awarded the Most Improved Player (MIP) award for their respective sports: Toure Mosley-Banks for boys’ basketball, Gabby Carruth for girls’ basketball, Robby Saligman for boys’ indoor track, Izzy MacFarlane and Lydia Russell for girls’ indoor track, Lucas DeSipio for boys’ squash, Lyla Forman for girls’ squash, Matt Berger for boys’ swimming, Ava Duane for girls’ swimming, and Matt Fiebach for wrestling.
Zayn Carey received the Coach’s Award for Sportsmanship for boys’ squash, and Simone Gibson received the Coach’s Award for Leadership for cheerleading.
The following Friends’ Central athletes received All-Friends Schools League honors: boys’ basketball – Antone Walker (first team); girls’ basketball – Nia Jordan (first team), Raanee Smith (honorable mention); boys’ swimming – Dyaus Rai and Billy Wilkerson (first team), Galen Cassidy, Nolan McGrann, and Luke Volkert (honorable mention); girls’ swimming – Sofia Acchione, Maddie Anderson, Elisabeth Forsyth, and Kate Raphaely (first team), Sophie Shack (honorable mention); wrestling – Matt Fiebach, Alex Helpin, and Cole Snyder (first team), Ben Helpin, CJ Penneys, and Jackson Snider (honorable mention).
Other winter sports highlights include two Main Line Athletes of the Week – Robby Saligman for boys’ indoor track and Elisabeth Forsyth for girls swimming.
