Joanne P. Hoffman to Serve as Interim Head of School
Ms. Hoffman served as head of Moses Brown, a nationally known Quaker school in Providence, Rhode Island, for 15 years. Prior to Moses Brown, her experience includes several leading independent schools including Concord Academy, where she was Associate Head of School and The Ethel Walker School, where she was Academic Dean. Since retiring, Joanne has conducted the 5-year evaluation and served as the Academic Dean at Beacon Academy in Boston, consulted at The Asheville School, and served on the Boards of Community Preparatory School and Axis of Hope.
Friends’ Central began a search for an Interim Head when David M. Felsen announced his retirement in April. The School is in the midst of a search for a Head of School and the Interim Head will play an important role in helping the School through a period of transition. Michael C. Kelly and Ann V. Satterthwaite, co-clerks of the Search Committee stated that the goal was “to find someone with vision, compassion, and integrity, someone who could work with this community as we move forward together.…Everyone who met Joanne was impressed by her leadership experience, her thoughtfulness, her ability to listen and communicate, and her passion for Friends education.” Joanne is the unanimous selection of the Search Committee and the full Board of Trustees of Friends’ Central School.
In commenting on her appointment, Joanne said “Having known David Felsen for many years as an outstanding leader and Friends’ Central as a vibrant Quaker school, I am delighted to join this wonderful community. During my recent visit, I experienced a school that is centered in its mission, filled with great promise, and ready to embrace the opportunities that this leadership transition offers.”
Joanne will assume her responsibilities in early July. Friends’ Central expects to announce a new Head of School early in 2012.
