Upper School Learning Experiences

In the Upper School, learning extends well beyond the traditional classroom, with unique and carefully crafted experiences that are integral to the Friends' Central approach to education. Students can engage in real-world problem-solving in the Audrie Gardham Ulmer '37 Center for Innovation & Design, or build a championship-winning robot with the Robotics Team, or take their learning global through language-based study abroad and exchange programs in places like France, Spain, and Italy.

Whether conducting field research, designing original projects, leading and mentoring their peers, or exploring new cultures, students are encouraged to connect their learning to the wider world. These experiences help students build the skills to lead with empathy in college and beyond.

Signature Programs & Conferences

Our signature programs are foundational to the Friends’ Central experience—deeply rooted traditions that have shaped generations of students for years and continue to evolve as an essential part of how learning comes to life in the Upper School.

Teams & Groups

We offer a wide range of teams, clubs, and affinity groups that reflect the diverse interests and identities within our community. Whether competing collaboratively, exploring shared passions, or building community through student-led initiatives, these groups help students explore the paths they may pursue long after their time at Friends’ Central.

Experiential Travel

Students have the opportunity to travel domestically and internationally as part of their academic and athletic programs. Class trips are also meaningful part of the Upper School experience, helping students strengthen their sense of community and develop connection outside of the classroom while creating shared experiences that stay with them long after they return.

Service Learning

Upper School students engage in service learning in many ways, through outreach to communities outside our school, within our school community, and through our Upper School student-run Service Committee.
