FCS Lower School Remote Learning Overview
Virtual Friends’ Central in the Lower School takes a hybrid approach with both synchronous and asynchronous learning. Our focus is developmentally appropriate, child-centered teaching at each grade level. Our early childhood teaching focuses on activities that students can complete at their own pace. As grades progress and students become more independent, more synchronous time is added, and in grades 3-5, new content is introduced in small, flexible synchronous groups. This intentional planning is responsive to the wide range of needs our families are experiencing during this pandemic. All grades release new content Monday-Thursday and then participate in Community Friday each week that includes assemblies, live read alouds, yoga, and other community-building activities.
During Virtual Friends’ Central, our families’ primary point person is their child(ren)’s classroom teacher(s). Unlike the other two divisions of the School, in Lower School (Nursery - grade 4) we have self-contained classrooms where teachers are posting all of the academic assignments and activities for your child. In grade 5, both the literacy teacher and the math teacher work as a team to push out work to their students in their specific subject areas. Our Lower School specialists provide options for assignments for the grade levels for which they are responsible. You will locate those activities on each child’s virtual page on SeeSaw and, for grade 5, on Google Classroom.
Resources for ParentsAs we continue to settle into the routine of learning at home, we thought it would be helpful to share a curated list of online resources for you and your children for education and enrichment. Several of these resources require registration and/or are free for a limited time.
Friends’ Central Lower School Library Online Resources are always available to our students. These resources can be accessed at home and will continue to be available when we return to school.
