McILwrick’s First-Team Honor Highlights Four All-Ivy Selections

PRINCETON, N.J. – Cornell field hockey player Sam McILwrick was a unanimous first-team All-Ivy selection when the conference honors were announced this afternoon. The senior back headlines four Big Red selections, as she is joined by classmate Krysten Mayers and sophomore Maddie Henry on the second-team, while sophomore Maddy Conklin was named honorable mention.  The four selections are the most for Cornell since having five honorees during the 2014 season.

McILwrick earns first-team honors for the second straight season, after a second-team selection as a freshman. The anchor of the Big Red defense, she helped Cornell post the third lowest goals-against average in the conference (1.43), a mark that was good for 18th in the nation. The Big Red defense also held opponents to fewer than five shots on goal in 8-of-16 games and allowed just 5.5 penalty corners per contest.  McILwrick also provided an offensive spark, ranking second on the team in goals (5) and third overall in points (12).

Mayers becomes just the eighth Big Red field hockey player to earn four All-Ivy honors in a career with her third consecutive second-team selection, following an honorable mention nod as a rookie. The senior forward led the Big Red in goals (6) and points (16) for the third straight season and graduates as the program's leader in career points (99) and career goals (42). Half of her goals on the year proved to be the game-winners, including the overtime tally vs. Brown, which also gave Mayers the career scoring title.

Henry's second-team selection is the first Ivy honor of her career as she emerged as the Big Red's starting goalie five games into the season. The sophomore netminder opened the year with a shutout streak of 291:09, the second longest in program history, and finished the year with a 7-5 record. She currently ranks first in the Ivy League and fifth in the NCAA with a .795 save percentage, while posting the third best goals-against average in the conference (1.49).

Conklin picks up her first-ever Ivy League postseason award with an honorable mention selection. A solid do-it-all midfielder, Conklin has a vital role on the Big Red's defensive scheme, while also providing an offensive threat. She finished the year with one goal and one assist.

The Big Red finished the season with a 10-6 record overall (3-4 Ivy).
