Bookmark myfcs.org for the Veracross Parent Portal with Online Directory!

You may have noticed that we did not hand out paper directories this week. Every year, we recycle more and more unclaimed directories, and everyone recycles their directories at the end of the year - so much waste! We are offering an alternative - our online directory at myfcs.org, which in addition to your child(ren)'s schedule, has many advantages:

  • It is always up-to-date
  • You can run a class list
  • You can always find it
  • It helps you find families who live near you

Please take a look at this useful Veracross help document and give the online version a try. If this online interface is not helpful to you, we are happy to send you a paper directory, which we will print to order. If you would like to receive a paper directory, check JTF next week for an order form.

Support US Service Committee's Hurricane Harvey Relief Collection
The FCS Upper School Service Committee is collecting materials for Hurricane Harvey relief. We will be assembling flood relief buckets for UMCOR. The list of materials for the buckets can be found here. We will be collecting materials until Sept. 22, assembling the kits, and then driving them to a distribution center. Students can bring materials from this list to their homerooms or directly to the Service Committee collection corner in FCC 101.

Edward E. Ford Foundation Awards Challenge Grant to Friends' Central

Friends' Central was awarded a $50,000 challenge grant from The Edward E. Ford Foundation, a national organization that supports independent schools. The funding will support the Shallcross Hall project, specifically the inclusion of a Teaching Kitchen within the total renovation of the Dining Hall. FCS must raise $100,000 to get the $50,000 grant from the Foundation. Any gifts restricted to the Dining Hall can be used to meet the challenge. You can send a gift to the Development Office with a note restricting it to the E.E. Ford match, make a gift online writing E.E. Ford in the comment section, or contact Bob Cotter (bcotter@friendscentral.org or 610-645-5076) for more info. Read more about the challenge grant here.

Friends' Central at the Philadelphia Union!

Come with FCS to see the Philadelphia Union play the Seattle Sounders on Sunday, Oct. 1 at 1 pm, then come support our Varsity boys' and girls' soccer teams as they play Shipley on Talen Energy Field on Tuesday, Oct. 3 at 4 pm and 6 pm. We plan on having most, if not all, of the Middle and Upper Schools attend on Oct. 3 - pregame and halftime activities for MS and JV soccer teams to be included!

Tickets for the Union vs. Sounders game are $40 with a $3 fee. Transportation to and from the game will be available for those who are interested. We are in the process of planning an FCS tailgate before the game - a great One FCS opportunity! If you have any questions, please email Michelle Crowley. Let's make this a standing FCS tradition! Click here to register through 9/24.

Lower School News

Message from Kelly Pierre

This morning, we rang the bell to officially welcome the Lower School to the 2017-2018 school year. Here is what I shared with your children at the bell-ringing ceremony: "This year, our theme is "The Arts." All of you are artists. Some of you are dancers; others are painters. Some of you are drummers, and some of you sing. Some of you write hip-hop; some of you are cartoonists. Some of you draw, and some of you sew. Art is how you show your creativity and imagination, and each of you has your own style. You might make big paint strokes or produce loud beats, take high jumps or create little lines, use soft voices or write lyrics that rhyme. Your style is an extension of who you are, and there is no one way to be.

"We love each of you. We love your beautiful brown skin, your bright blue eyes, your glasses, your curly red hair. We love that your families come from different places and speak many different languages. We love that some of you have two moms, one mom, a dad or two dads, a mom and dad, or live with grandparents. We love that you are girls and boys who are awesome at sports and also like pink, who sing in the chorus, build things and aren't afraid to cry. We value each and every one of you. Each of you makes Friends' Central a better and stronger school. We are glad you're here and can't wait to see how you express yourself in the art that will soon cover our halls and classrooms."

As part of an end-of-first-week celebration, the Middle School made giant bubbles!

Middle School News

Message from Alexa Quinn

To paraphrase one of my favorite musicals/movies, the halls are alive with the sound of Middle School students! Our focus this week was to orient students, help them connect and reconnect to both teachers and students, and to lay the foundations for our learning community -- both in individual classrooms and for the Middle School as a whole. We were excited to end the week with an all-Middle School maker activity this afternoon. See photo at left, and stay tuned for more!

As we get everything up and running, I have a fair amount of information to share with you this week. Please read the following and let me know if you have any questions!

Curriculum Night: Middle School Curriculum Night is this coming Thursday, September 14 at 7 pm. Please join us to meet your child's teachers and to learn more about the curriculum for this year. We will gather in the Meeting Room of Shallcross Hall, and I will begin at 7 pm by sharing some remarks. Parents/guardians will then travel to their child's advisor's room. Upper School students head to class on the first day of school

Upper School News

Message from Bill Kennedy

Our first week in the Upper School has been marked by two important achievements. First, returning students and teachers have made their new classmates and colleagues feel welcome all over campus, from the classroom to Meeting for Worship, from the stage to the playing fields. We look forward to all these new learners will share with us as we expand and enrich our Upper School program. Next, the students have proven themselves ready to meet an even greater challenge: moving from the dining hall in Shallcross -- one of the kids' favorite spots -- to our temporary eating space in the Rex Gym. While I must confess to some trepidation about this move, the students have taken to their new digs with positive energy and goodwill. They have begun to make the "Rexeteria" or the "Rextaurant" their own! In addition, when the weather is good, many students have been taking advantage of the new picnic tables around campus and the newly installed tent on the Felsen Common.

We look forward to seeing parents and guardians of 9th and 10th grade students on Tuesday (9/12) for our first Curriculum Night of the year. Click here to read Bill's full message.
