Student Walkout & Silent Vigil on City Avenue "There's so much we can do, and we are the generation that will grow up and make change." -Current Student Inspired by the victims and heroes in Parkland, FL, and led by over 40 concerned student and faculty organizers, more than 200 Upper School students and faculty participated in the National School Walkout on March 14 to end gun violence. From 10:00-10:17 am, students & faculty lined City Avenue holding posters memorializing each victim in Parkland or representing gun violence statistics, peacefully protesting gun violence. Alums Perform on Campus: Hardwork Movement Last month brought a special performance to campus from Philly-based rapper Chill Moody and Hip Hop Fundamentals along with the group Hardwork Movement, featuring four talented alumni/ae: Dwight Dunston '06, Rob Ricketts '06, and Keenan Willis '03, and Dani Gershkoff '06. Girls' Indoor Track Places Third in State The Varsity Girls' Indoor Track team took third place at the PA Indoor Track and Field State Meet. Gabby Wilkinson '18 finished second in both the mile and the 800, and anchored the winning Distance Medley relay team with Izzy MacFarlane '20, Ava Forman '18, and Nadia Taranta '18. Inara Shell '21 set a school record to finish third in the triple jump, and the 4X200M quartet of Izzy MacFarlane '20, Inara Shell '21, Ava Forman '18, and Bailie Stovall '21 also set a new school record. The Distance Medley relay team then finished 12th in the country at the New Balance National Indoor Championship meet in NYC this past weekend. 20th John Singer '01 Table Tennis Tournament The Annual John Singer '01 Table Tennis Tournament is played in honor of the spirit and courage of John Singer '01, who had great love for the game and passed away during his freshman year at Friends' Central in 1998. This competition, which students, teachers, and staff have played at FCS for 20 years, culminated today in a much-anticipated championship match with annual commentary by Upper School teachers Tom MacFarlane and Jim Rosengarten. This year's finalists, Justin Rubin '21 and Adam Serota '21, played in a close match with Serota ultimately taking home the win. Chorus to Sing at Carnegie Hall Over the weekend of April 6-8, members of the Upper School Chorus will sing at Carnegie Hall under the direction of Grammy-winning composer and conductor Eric Whitacre in a choral music festival series by Distinguished Concerts International New York (DCINY). This three-day event offers students the opportunity to work with internationally recognized conductors, sing with other high school and college students from around the world, and be part of once-in-a-lifetime performance at Carnegie Hall. Despite weather challenges, we reached our gift goal, unlocked the Challenge Match, and raised over $50,000 in gifts and pledges for the Friends' Central Fund.
