Counseling

It is our belief that children learn best when they feel safe, nurtured, and happy. Our counselors and teachers work together closely to create and perpetuate an environment in which our students will thrive.

Social and emotional support is provided through our school psychologists. These mental health professionals provide confidential short-term counseling to our students. If continuing care is required, they provide referrals to highly respected professionals with meaningful experience working with children and families. Our counselors provide assessments and are available for consultations with teachers, administrators, and parents. In addition, psychologists also provide psycho-educational programming in each division.

Groups meetings with counselors by grade level or by advisory may be organized to address areas of interest or concern.

Lower School Counseling

The Lower School counselor is available to provide support to students and families to facilitate communications as needed. As an integral member of the Lower School faculty, the counselor is an active participant in problem-solving efforts which involve individuals and groups.

On a weekly basis, the counselor meets with students in grades 1-5 for "Feedback." Feedback sessions are designed to provide guidance for young students as they learn to manage their interactions with classmates and others at school. Students learn to listen to each other respectfully, to advocate for themselves respectfully, and to affirm one another’s positive behaviors.

The counselor provides support to individual students as needed; she also offers opportunities for groups of students to meet around specific topics of interest.

Middle School Counseling

Working as an integral part of the Support Services Team, the Middle School counselor provides short-term individual counseling and participates in teacher team meetings designed to highlight student needs. The counselor works collaboratively with faculty members to help identify strategies which will enhance a student’s experience.

When appropriate, the counselor communicates and consults with outside mental health professional regarding students with social or emotional concerns. The counselor may refer students and their parents to outside professionals.

Upper School Counseling

Working as an integral part of the Support Services team, the Upper School counselor provides short-term individual counseling and participates in teacher team meetings designed to highlight student needs. The counselor works collaboratively with faculty members to help identify strategies which will enhance a student’s experience.
