On Friday, February 23, Chinese students at Friends’ Central School shared a part of their culture by presenting a dynamic, artistic, and moving Chinese New Year Assembly for the entire Upper School community.
Hosted by Dylan Zou '20 and Vicky Liu '20, with faculty advisor Alejandra Socorro, the Assembly began with a beautiful piano performance of a traditional Chinese song, performed by Victoria Feng '20 and Ellie Yang '21. Then, to get warmed up, Upper School students participated in a lively game of Kahoot, which gave everyone an opportunity to learn some Chinese trivia.
Vicky and Dylan taught the crowd how to say “Happy Chinese New Year” (新年快乐/新年快樂), then shared some common Chinese phrases, from “Happy Spring Festival” (快乐的春节) to “May all your wishes come true” (心想事成).
Next, Chersea Gong '19 gave a very moving performance on the zither, with corresponding poetry recited by Angela Zhang '18, Mingyu Zhou '19, Xinping Xie '19, and Choya Chen '19. To wrap up the assembly, Bella Liu '21 and Sally Su '21 collaborated on a dance and flute performance, wowing students and adults alike in the audience.
Upper School Principal Bill Kennedy shares, “I was delighted that our wonderful and talented students from China had the opportunity to share some of their many artistic gifts with us this morning, especially as expressions of their Chinese culture. As a school, we have been most fortunate to welcome so many fabulous young people from China into our community. Today was just one more demonstration of what they bring to FCS each day.”
